Stockholm
Ok guys! Before I start studying - over the weekend! can u believe it? I have to study! Have this huge project - isolating bioluminescent bacteria and getting it's 16s rRNA. Wow. fun! (as my lecturer was trying to convince us). Went with my german lab partner benny to go buy herring today. Hope that the fish doesn't start to smell just yet. Cause I left it in the common fridge. No choice there. Freezing it will kill my bacteria. Anyway I was supposed to talk about stockholm and not glowing bacteria.
Stockholm was so much like home. Big city, escalators, buses and subways. Oh man, I love subways. Just like haran, i'm a city girl at heart (of course he's a city boy don't be silly!). But I'm getting used to life in lund now. Eagerly anticipating amelia's arrival. but... need to buy a an extra pillow! Anyway my parents will need it i guess. I'm super stingy now.
Anyway..back to stockholm. It was a littl colder than Lund, being more northerly. But was sunny for the first 2 days. Man, we ate ice cream everyday. A little ex, but we were kinda on holiday after all. The 2nd week in sweden passed much more quickly than the first.
Gamala Stan - the old city, in stockholm has all these old buildings, and narrow cobblestoned paths. Cobblestone isn't that appealing to me anymore, considering that lund has lots of that in the town centre. But ah.. the royal palace, the churches the statues in Stockholm. So much charm.
The downtown area.. mm i liked! So much like Singapore. Bustling, lots of people, huge department stores. What I liked about Stockholm is that there's this nice balance of old and new. :) and because there are more people there, I felt a lot more at home. Even the fact that people are more reckless drivers and are less considerate to pedestrains gladdened my heart. All the nice drivers in Lund kinda freak me out a little because everyone is willing to give way. Felt a little odd at first.
What else about stockholmm. Oh yeah! The 1st day when we went to Gamla Stan, we got a 'free' tour of the old city. haha.. we just joined in with the Stockholm uni students who paid 20kr for the tour and had a nice.. free! tour. haha..
The second day started a little rainy. We caught a ferry to Djugarden where there's this huge place- the Vasamusem housing this ancient ship that did such a good job of sinking 500m from it's starting point. maiden voyage too! well done engineers. But that ship is a piece of work. I can imagine all the artisians swearing from the harbour as the ship sank. Man! It must have been a hell lot of work.
Next we went to this outdoor museum - Skansen! Very quaint! We got to see moose! and reindeer who were.. doing all sorts of inappropropriate stuff. Also saw reanactments of the way the Swedes used to live. Old bakeries, cheese making, rope twinning (is there such a term?) and these adorable kids doing folk dances. damn cute!
The peps who housed us in Stockholm are SO nice! Isabel and Sook Nee! They cooked for us, gave up beds for peps like Kelly who couldn't sleep in a sleeping bag properly (aiyah! woman!). They even bought us cookies for the train ride back. SO nice of them. I felt so taken care of! :)
Oh yeah, the third day saw us spending an exorbitant amount (literally sinful) of money on smorgsbord, a tradition swedish buffet. Lots of herring, smoked salmon, hams, swedish hot dishes.. desert. in this fancy smancy hotel - Grand Hotel. We looked terribly out of place and man, i felt kinda awkward. Even the waiter could sense that we were so out of our league there. But care! We paid good money for good service... although the dude didn't understand that i wanted warm water cause it was cold!!Anyway, they gave us tips on how to eat this and that. very helpful.
Leaving stockholm was a mild panic. The platforms changed at the last minute so there was a lot of scurrying around. The thought of having to buy another ticket was pretty horrifying. But we got back to Lund safe and sound and penny pinching me walked back, bags and all to Vildanden (my hall) from the central station instead of paying 12kr (3 bucks) to take a bus. Have to save money after that food splurge.
Just to keep u guys updated abt what's been gg on since last weekend. School has started for me. 2 days and I'm beat. I had lessons from 9 to 5 yest and 9 to 3 today. tell me that isn't tiring. And it's stupid lab stuff too! Gram staining and total and viable cell count.. for u life science students who know that this is basic stuff! Well, my lab partner - Benny, is SUPER on. super super on. Considering that we're both exchange students and that grades don't matter, we seem like xiao on Singaporeans gunning for an A! But our project sounds damn interesting. Going to isolate bioluminescent bacteria and cultivate it. Then extract it's DNA and figure out it's species. Cool huh! We bought herring today to get some bioluminescent bacteria from off it. I'm psyched. We're gg to leave the fish in a fridge for 2 weeks then sit in a dark room with smelly fish and pick the glowing colonies off it, then purify it some more before we get the DNA. Joy! UN going to live in the lab for 10 weeks. At least the first 2 weeks will be more slack because we just leave the fish there.
Lecture was.. ok i guess. My lecturer today was so shy! Kept mumbling- worse than siva. haha. so slap me when i get back dei.
Cycling to Biology house is tiring! Uphill most of the way, but going back is a breeze. I'm so thankful that I brought my running windbreaker although I have scrapped the running idea. I have enough exercise everyday thank you. The wind doens't get to my chest - it's chilly! and it's not too hot because the back has holes in it. Finally! This windbreaker is useful. After so many years of lying dormant in the cupboard.
Now I'm beat, have to read 4 chapters of Brock's biology, figuring out how to cultivate my bacteria and have kitchen cleanup, brunch with mentor group, and cell group with the international cell tmr. excited! :) love u guys. miss ya
